The Ego Doesn’t Like To Die, can you blame it?

Writer's picture: Graham SmithGraham Smith

Many successful and ambitious leaders and entrepreneurs are working in boom/ bust cycles.

Do any of these sound familiar….

Mini-breakdowns are a thing and you rely on friends and family to pull you up.

When you take time off work, you spend the first 3 days trying to unwind.

Without intense workouts to blow off steam, you might explode in anger.

You use fear of failure or not being good enough to motivate yourself.

You are unwell every 4 to 8 weeks and are forced to take a break.

Every now and then you blow up and randomly apply for jobs.

If you can relate to any of these, there's nothing wrong with you.

Also, if you’re fed up with living this way, change is not only possible, but more accessible than you might think.

When we try to change in the way we self motivate and inspire ourselves, we’re often faced with ego death.

Just like most other things, the ego doesn't like to die, and it puts up a fight.

Deep down, many successful and ambitious leaders and entrepreneurs fear letting go of their drivers.

They fear letting go of their grit, their fire, their intensity, even their guilt, will leave them unmotivated.

Others subconsciously fear that inviting peace, acceptance and joy into their lives will lead to them ‘taking their foot off the gas.’

In my experience working with 100’s of high achievers, this is never the case and misses the point.

When we switch from being motivated by fear, self blame, anger, defiance, we become motivated by a more sustainable energy.

An energy that facilitates physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and psychological growth.

No more explosions of emotions. The ability to understand and regulate our emotions.

No more burnout. Awareness of needs and conscious choices to respond to them.

Less sickness and fatigue. More energy to work effectively and efficiently.

No more cycles of boom bust. Consistent high performance.

The resistance to making these shifts often makes the ego speak more loudly.

At first, fear grows and things seem to be getting harder.

This is where trusting the process is most important.

It’s helpful to acknowledge this as an ego death and remain aware that rebirth is coming.

On the other side of ego death is always a more aligned, connected and conscious way of living and working.

As we start to see results, we begin to enjoy the process.
