The eternal search for Mastery

If you’re receiving this newsletter, I’m guessing you’re interested in self development.

If that's true, I’m guessing there’s one or more area(s) of development you're focussing on right now; maybe it’s productivity, emotional resilience, spiritual awareness, or something else.

If I’m right so far, my guess is you’re currently reading a book, listening to a podcast and signing up for various newsletters on the topic.

If none of this relates, feel free to stop reading, otherwise, you’re in the right place!

At this point, I can relate.

For years, before I discovered my passion for coaching, I dived into any self development topic I could get my hands on.

I jumped from 5AM Club, to Miracle Morning, this productivity modality to that, spiritual awareness here to emotional connection and meditation there.

Deep inside I knew I was what I call ‘dinner party smart’ on these topics.

I could talk for hours about the research and the benefits, name all the experts and gurus, the books and the podcasts (not that anyone cared).

I was moving in the right direction and making small changes to my life certainly led to improvements.

But I struggled to synthesise my knowledge into wisdom.

Here’s the challenge I was facing in one sentence; I was on the surface of the medium, not in the depth.

Here are some examples of being on the surface of the medium

  • Reading books

  • Listening to podcasts

  • Discussing with folks that are interested

  • Attending off-the-shelf trainings

There is absolutely value to these practices, but they aren't in the depth of the topic.

Here are some examples of going deep into the medium

  • Practising the medium consistently

  • Engaging the support of an expert

  • Retreats and trainings where you practise

  • Teaching others to practise

And by the way, when it comes to being on the surface or in the depth, it’s not an either/ or thing, it’s both and!

A master is someone who is committed to lifelong learning on a topic.

Mastery is a process, not a destination.

Whatever you're working on right now, whether it’s starting or scaling your side hustle, being a thought leader in your field, becoming a productivity master, or increasing your spiritual awareness, what one thing can you commit to this week that will support you to get beneath the surface and deep into the medium.

You’re doing great, keep going!
